What is Chiropractic?

Welcome to the Longlevens Chiropractic Clinic! Chiropractors treat problems with joints, bones and muscles and the effects they have on the nervous system. Working on all joints of the body, concentrating particularly on the spine, they make careful specific adjustments to treat the root cause of the problem (British Chiropractic Association, 2008). Treatment is supported by various types of soft tissue work and other physical modalities.

The chiropractic profession is fully regulated and all chiropractors must be registered by law with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) to practice in the UK.

How can Chiropractic help?

All different types of injuries are treated by Chiropractors every day and patients vary from new born babies through to the elderly. Treatment techniques vary according to the individual and are always specific to the needs of that particular injury.

After an initial thorough examination, your chiropractor will clearly diagnose the problem. He/ she will then discuss your options and advise you of an appropriate treatment programme, plus supporting lifestyle suggestions to help manage the problem.

Each course of treatment will always conclude with specific clear instructions on self-help. This enables you, the patient to keep on track and prevent recurrence.

Chiropractors successfully treat a wide variety of problems such as back pain, neck pain, sciatica, trapped nerves, sports injuries, head-aches, car accident neck sprain injuries, leg or arm pain, stiff joints and wear/ tear, repetitive strain injuries (RSI's) and muscle tension problems.

Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common injuries in the Western world. In 2004, research by the British Chiropractic Association found that at least 33% of the population are suffering with back pain at any one time and that over 75% of the population will at some stage during their lives suffer significant back pain.

Incorrect sitting positions, heavy lifting, prolonged driving and repetitive movements all take their toll on the back. Your chiropractor can get things moving again and carefully discuss simple measures that will help avoid problems in the future.

Neck Pain

Modern day physical and emotional stresses are a key reason why neck pain is a common problem experienced by many people. Any loss of the gentle gliding motion of the small joints in the neck can cause muscle irritation and restriction in movement. Causes include trauma on a large scale such as after a fall or sudden twist, or on a small scale but repetitively over time such as prolonged use of a PC at work.

Your Chiropractor is on hand to get the neck back doing its job and ensure a quick and easy recovery from injury!

Wear and Tear

One of few guarantees in life is that joints over time will slowly wear. As cartilage thins and extra bone is laid down around that joint, movement can become stiffer and more painful. Correct movement of the joints can slowly be lost over many years which sometimes leads to irritation of the surrounding ligaments, muscles and nerves that all support a joint.

Although you cannot turn the clock back, your Chiropractor can get the joints working better which can often help people live more active lives with relief of pain and discomfort.

Car Accident Neck Sprain Injuries

A car accident neck sprain-type injury is where the neck is forced beyond its physical limits with little warning. Most commonly these injuries are as a result of a road traffic accident or collision where the neck is thrown heavily in one direction and often back in the opposing direction immediately after. Falls in the garden, awkward tackles on the rugby field and bangs on the head can also give these types of injuries. Forceful stretching of the delicate joints in the neck can often strain important ligaments and muscles needed for support, causing widespread inflammation and discomfort. Car accident neck sprain injuries can cause tremendous pain and restricted movement for weeks and in some cases years!

Patients often also experience other associated problems such as vertigo, dizzy spells, headaches, tiredness, shoulder/ arm pain and difficulty sleeping. With the help of chiropractic, getting the bones and soft-tissues of the neck moving again will aid a speedy and permanent recovery from a car accident neck sprain injury.

Sport Injuries

Injuries during sport vary massively from small tendon strains of the wrist in Table tennis to prolapsed spinal discs in Rugby. No matter what level of sport played, any type of repeat trauma to an area of the body can eventually cause problems and continuing to participate often leads to a interference in the recovery process. Your chiropractor will not only clearly outline what the problem is but also get you back on your feet and ensure that when the time to return to sport is right, you have the correct approach to prevent re-injury through prescribed warm-up exercises, training techniques and precautionary notes on avoiding relapse.

Chiropractors are now very important members of the medical teams in many top level football, rugby and cricket teams including Liverpool FC, Manchester United FC, Arsenal FC, Wasps RFC, Leicester RFC and the England Test Cricket Team.

Over 60% of the current world top 100 ranked golfers on tour regularly receive treatment from a chiropractor and perhaps the greatest golfer to have ever played the game, Tiger Woods also has regular check ups with his chiropractor!
